Students seeking to obtain degrees in teaching must be admitted into the Teacher Education Program. Admission into the Teacher Education Program normally needs to take place prior to the end of the sophomore year. This process involves meeting all requirements of admission and satisfactory completion of the admissions process. Students will not be allowed to enroll in higher level education courses until after they have been admitted into the program. Students who are attending schools other than ASU - Jonesboro, must first be admitted into ASU - Jonesboro, before being admitted into the Teacher Education Program.
In order to be eligible to be admitted into the Teacher Education Program, you to must meet the following requirements:
attain a minimum passing scores on the PRAXIS I: Pre-Professional Skills Tests (reading >= 172, writing >=173 and math >=171). Scores are valid for three years. Praxis test scores older than three years old; the test must be retaken. You may screen without Praxis Scores, but they must be received no later than August 1st, to be admitted.
attain a minimum overall GPA of 2.50. Program of Study students must have a minimum of 3.0 overall in courses for their Program of Study.
complete specific courses with a grade of “C” or better in each of the following: ENG 1003 Freshman English I, ENG 1013 Freshman English II, MATH 1023 College Algebra, ECH/MLED 2002 Intro to Educational Technology, ECH/MLED 2022 Introduction to Teaching, and SCOM 1203 Oral Communications or their equivalents from another university/college.
complete a minimum of 30 semester hours.
complete an evaluation of Career Decision Awareness. This inventory is done through the Counseling Center and may take 2 to 4 weeks to complete.
write a two-page double-spaced typewritten philosophy of education. This normally will be completed as one of the requirements for the Introduction to Teaching class.
complete the On-line Registration for Screening form to schedule where and when you will screen.
complete the Application for Admission form with all required supporting documents. Official college transcripts from all universities/colleges attended and original Praxis I score reports are required as part of the Application for Admission packet.
attach the Application for Admission Screening Checklist to the front of your Application for Admission packet.
fill in your portion of the Application for Admission Screening Checklist.
read the Retention Procedures and sign the Retention Plan Agreement.
schedule a time to meet with your advisor and have him/her check over your Application for Admission packet and fill in his/her portion of the Application for Admission Screening Checklist.
turn in your completed and signed Application for Admission packet at least ten calendar days prior to your screening date. Packets should be turned into the Screening Coordinator.
appear before the Department Screening Committee at your scheduled location, date and time for your screening interview.
if you are from campus other than ASU - Jonesboro, you must go through admissions into ASU - Jonesboro, prior to being allowed to register for Teacher Education classes after successful screening into the Teacher Education Program.
After satisfactory screening into the Teacher Education Program the Professional Education Programs Director, will send you a formal letter of acceptance. Official admittance to the teacher education program does not carry a guarantee of continuance in the program. In addition to the retention checkpoints (see the current Teacher Education Handbook), you must maintain academic proficiency, moral responsibility, emotional stability, and satisfactory professional growth to continue in the program.

On-line Registration for Screening
The On-line Registration for Screening form must be completed at your earliest convenience in order to reserve your screening location and time. Students who submit this form later than two weeks prior to screening may not be allowed to screen.
The Application for Admission form must be completed and reviewed by your advisor prior to screening. Your completed application packet must be turned into the Screening Coordinator seven calendar days prior to the screening date.
